What Does a 3D Animator Do?
It takes more than just a vivid imagination, the love of cartooning, and a wild desire to work in the entertainment field to do well at an animation job. If you're looking for a career in creating film, cartoon, television, internet, or marketing animations, you'll need extensive training in technique, the use of complex software, and a native ability to work well with others under extreme deadline pressure.
A career in 3D animation involves creating 3D moving images using computer software. These images are made with the use of digital models. After the models have been created, details are added, like hair, clothing, skin and any other item that completes a scene.
Animators are in constant communication with programmers, illustrators, designers, and storyboard artists. They may also be called upon to coordinate their work with writers, voice-over actors, sound technicians, and musical score composers. They must remain open to feedback and professional criticism as well as become responsible for delivering their work on schedule.
Some 3D animators create long feature movies, for instance. Others may create shorter animations, like short skits, which can be used for advertisements or website animations. Some 3D animators specialize in creating animations for video games, and others create special effects for live action motion pictures.
Depending on an animator’s area of expertise, he/she might also specialize in creating different aspects of an animation. For instance, one animator may create animated people, while others will help complete the background animation, like landscapes and buildings.
Here are examples of several short 3D animation films:
